The hike towards the Steindalsbreen on the Lyngenfjord is definitely one of my favorites in Norway. It is part of the Lyngen Alps of Northern Norway. Read further to find out why this hike is one of my favorites.
Practical information of the hike
The Steindalsbreen hike is one of my favorite hikes in Norway. The hike is a 12 km long hike and has an elevation gain of 535 m to go out and back. This hike will take approximately 5 hours, including a long stop at the glacier. There is a large free parking available where you can park your car or camper. Furthermore, you are allowed to stay overnight in your camper at the parking and there is a toilet available.
Make sure you have proper hiking shoes, because the path is uneven and can be slippery after rain. Don't forget to bring enough water and food for this hike, since it is a long hike and partly unprotected from the sun after the first stop at the self - serviced hut. If it is sunny, make sure to bring your sunglasses and wear sunscreen. You will be able to rest at the Steindalshut, which is approximately at the halfway point of the hike. What to expect on the Steindalsbreen hike on the Lyngenfjord
Path to the Steindalshytta
The first part of the hike will take you through a beautiful forest. You will slowly climb up to a higher altitude and have views of the surrounding mountains. There are multiple signs on the way with details of the scenery. One of the sign will say it is the highest point towards the hut. After that sign, the path will go down a little and then almost no elevation gain towards the hut. Just before you arrive at the hut, make sure to look out for the waterfall on your right side in the distance. It is a beautiful waterfall. When you arrive at the hut, you can take a break before you continue towards the Steindalsbreen glacier.
Steindalshytta towards the Steindalsbreen glacier
The hike continues by crossing the bridge at the Steindalshytta. You will walk through the forest, besides the beautiful river, and you will end up walking through the valley. Sheep will be grazing around in the valley and might cross your path. On this part of the hike, there is no shade. Just before you arrive at the glacier, you need to climb up again on the rocky path. The elevation gain is steep, and watch out for the loose stones on the path when going up and down.
On the way towards the glacier, you will see small signs with a year on it. These indicate the points where the glacier ended in that year. It is shocking to notice how fast the glacier is disappearing. You can walk towards the glacier lake and sit down to enjoy the beautiful nature and silence. This is the end of the trail, and you need to walk back on the same path. Please do not attempt hiking on the glacier, because this is extremely dangerous if you are not skilled to do this! If you are brave, you can take a dip into the ice-cold water of the glacier.

The Steindalsbreen lies on one of the beautiful fjords in Northern Norway. It is called the Lyngenfjord and also the Lyngen Alps. The fjord is located close to Tromsø and perfect for a road trip. The Lyngenfjord is known for its many hikes and beautiful views.
